What is IB


The International Baccalaureate is a non-profit educational institution founded in Geneva, Switzerland in 1968.
The IB network is made up of over 4000 international schools spread over nearly 150 countries. The number of IB schools in Europe is increasing every year.

In Belgium there are already 9 IB schools and a considerable number of these pupils are Belgian. In May 2015, 141, 831 students were awarded their diplomas, showing a 4.8% increase when compared to May 2014.

The goal of the programme is:

  • An international education programme
  • Intercultural understanding and respect
  • The acquisition of second or third languages
  • An open-minded point of view

The IB programme aims to develop several qualities in the learner in order for them to become: Independent inquirers:

  • Well-informed and knowledgeable - exploring problems and questions both on a local as well as on a worldwide level
  • Critical thinkers – able to reflect and take well-informed and ethically sound decisions
  • Communicators – able to interact with others
  • Young people who act with integrity – taking responsibility for their actions and be able to their consequences.
  • Altruists – capable of caring and compassion
