What is IB

The International Baccalaureate is a non-profit educational institution founded in Geneva, Switzerland in 1968.

The IB network is made up of almost 5,000 international schools spread over 140 countries. The number of IB schools in Europe is increasing every year.

In Belgium there are already 9 IB schools and a considerable number of these pupils are Belgian. In May 2015, 141, 831 students were awarded their diplomas, showing a 4.8% increase when compared to May 2014.

The aims of the diploma programme are to provide:

  • A more complete programme compared to other school systems
  • Intercultural understanding and respect

Before taking the final exams, students follow two years of lessons, which include:

  • Studying six subjects, chosen from the six subject groups
  • A Theory of Knowledge course
  • Writing an extended essay
  • Participation in the CAS programme, consisting of creativity, activity and service
