Middle Years Programme

The Middle Year Programme (MYP) is a five-year programme for students aged 11 to 16. It builds on the values, learning patterns and skills developed in Primary. Students have two choices:

  • a programme entirely in English with French as a second language (beginner or intermediate level).
  • a bilingual programme with French and English immersion courses in order to fully develop fluency in both languages.

Both programmes include sciences, maths, languages, humanities and Arts courses which are crafted to the MYP philosophy and curricula.

For the first half of the year students prepare a theatre performance which is performed in a theatre in Brussels.  For the second half, students make a short film on a given subject. This is presented to parents at the end of the school year.

In the final year of the Middle Years Programme (MYP 5), all students undertake the IB MYP Personal Project, which is presented to the entire EIM community at the end of the year. They are guided and advised by their supervisor, but the project is a significant benchmark in student intellectual curiosity, thinking and individual study. This is an important project, individual to each student, which hones their research, writing, creative and presenting skills. The Personal Project is central to success in the MYP programme.

Every week, students have sports lessons: basketball, hockey and volleyball. For this, we are able to take advantage of the sports facilities of VUB (University of Brussels), located just a few minutes from EIM.

Below are the tables for the English-only and Bilingual programmes for MYP, identifying the subjects taught and the hours per week allocated to them.

Supervised study

Every day, from 3:45 pm to 4:45 pm, students can stay at school to revise, study in a quiet place or to ask questions to the teachers supervising. This is not mandatory, but it can be very helpful to students who have certain gaps or who prefer to complete their homework in school.
