Our DP students took part in the G4 ‘sciences’ project over the last couple of weeks. This is an interdisciplinary activity in which all Diploma Programme science students must participate. The intention is that students from the different group 4 subjects (biology, chemistry and physics) analyse a common topic or problem. This year students focused on the topic of ‘waste is useful’. The exercise is a collaborative experience where the emphasis is on the processes involved in, rather than the products of, such an activity. Our three groups of students investigated generating electricity from banana peels, making and studying bio-diesel from waste cooking oil and butter and also turning starch waste from cooked rice into a bio-plastic.
