MYP5 Physics - a lot of FUN!
MYP 5 physics class was a lot of fun today! We are studying the unit, "Amazing structures: how have we learned to use force?". We are investigating the concepts of systems, form and scientific and technical innovation. Our statement of inquiry is "Nature's forms have inspired us to use systems of force to create innovative structures."
In the activity, we began by talking about the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and discussed which one of them was still standing and why. We talked about the shape of the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Eiffel Tower and the Burj Khalifa - all structures which are stable because they are narrow at the top and wide at the base.
For the construction challenge we went through the four steps: think, plan, execute and control. The students had 5 minutes to discuss and sketch their design for a tower made out of spaghetti and marshmallows. They had 20 minutes to build a tower as tall as possible, which had to support itself when measured. The winning tower was made by Team Tanmay and reached 105 cm high!
